Biography

Robert N. Stavins is one of the world’s leading environmental and climate economists, whose scholarship and policy engagement have shaped international climate governance for more than three decades. He is the A.J. Meyer Professor of Energy & Economic Development at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, where he also serves as Director of the Harvard Environmental Economics Program, Director of Graduate Studies for the Doctoral Programs in Public Policy and in Political Economy and Government, Co-Chair of the Harvard Business School–Kennedy School Joint Degree Programs, and Director of the Harvard Project on Climate Agreements.

Professor Stavins’ work has been pivotal in the design of market-based environmental policies, particularly carbon pricing and emissions trading systems. His research and advisory contributions have played a critical role in informing the evolution of carbon markets under the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement, influencing governments, international institutions, and business leaders worldwide.

Through extensive publications, policy dialogues, and international collaborations, Professor Stavins continues to be recognized as a central figure in advancing pragmatic, economically sound, and globally coordinated solutions to climate change.
