Biography
Michael Gerrard is a Professor at Columbia Law School and the Columbia Climate School, and one of the United States’ leading authorities on environmental and climate change law. Over the course of his career, he has pioneered innovative legal strategies to address climate change, while writing and teaching extensively on environmental law, climate change law, and energy regulation.
Before joining the Columbia faculty in 2009, Professor Gerrard practised law in New York for three decades, most recently as a partner in charge of the New York office of Arnold & Porter. He has litigated numerous environmental cases and argued appeals in both federal and state courts, in addition to advising governments, corporations, and civil society organizations on regulatory compliance and sustainable development.
Professor Gerrard’s expertise and scholarship have been recognized globally; he has often been cited as one of the leading environmental lawyers in New York and internationally. His work continues to shape the field of climate governance and policy innovation.
